Achieving Your Ideal Body Shape with Plastic Surgery

Are you unhappy with the results of a previous liposuction procedure? Have you experienced changes in weight, aging or other factors that have impacted your body contour? If so, revision liposuction may be the solution you’re looking for.

Revision liposuction is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the results of a previous liposuction procedure. It is performed to correct any asymmetry, irregularity, or dissatisfaction with the initial results. The procedure can be performed on any area of the body that was previously treated, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, and neck.

Benefits of Revision Liposuction:

  • Corrects asymmetry or irregularity
  • Improves overall body contour
  • Boosts self-confidence and body image
  • Targets specific areas for improved results

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure also known as fat removal or body contouring that can help you achieve a slimmer and more contoured body shape. However, in some cases, the results of the procedure may not meet your expectations, leaving you with unsatisfactory results. If you’re unhappy with your previous liposuction experience, a liposuction revision procedure also known as liposuction correction or liposhifting, can help correct asymmetries, dimpling, and any other contour irregularities after a previous liposuction procedure.

What is Liposuction Revision?

Liposuction revision is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed under local or general anesthesia that corrects and improves the results of a previous liposuction procedure by removing excess fat. During the procedure, the surgeon will use a small cannula to remove any remaining fat deposits or reshape the treated area to achieve a more desired result. This procedure can address issues such as deformities, asymmetry, unevenness, scarring, dents, or persistent fat deposits. During a revision procedure, your plastic surgeon will remove additional fat, smooth out any irregularities, and refine the overall appearance of your treated areas. In some cases, additional fat grafting or skin tightening procedures may be recommended to achieve the best possible outcome.

Why Consider Liposuction Revision?

There are several reasons why you may consider liposuction revision, including:

  1. Improving Results: If you’re dissatisfied with the results of your previous liposuction procedure, a revision procedure can help you achieve the body shape you’ve been seeking.
  2. Correcting Complications: Some patients may experience complications from their previous liposuction procedure, such as asymmetry, scarring, or persistent fat deposits. A revision procedure can help address these issues and improve the overall appearance of your treated areas.
  3. Addressing Changes Over Time: As the body changes with age and weight fluctuations, the results of your previous liposuction procedure may no longer be satisfactory. A revision procedure can help you maintain your desired body shape over time.

Preparing for Liposuction Revision

Before your liposuction revision procedure, it’s important to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. During this consultation, your surgeon will examine your treated areas and discuss your goals for the revision procedure. Your surgeon will also review your medical history and any previous liposuction procedures you’ve had to determine if you’re a candidate for revision surgery.

Recovery and Results

After your liposuction revision procedure, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which should resolve over time. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your treated areas during your recovery. Most patients return to work within a few days and can resume normal activities within two to three weeks. It’s important to follow these instructions carefully to promote proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.

Most patients see a noticeable improvement in the appearance of their treated areas within a few weeks of their liposuction revision procedure. However, it may take several months for the final results to be visible. Your plastic surgeon will monitor your progress and provide you with any additional instructions or recommendations as needed.

What are the pros and cons of liposuction revision?

  • It can correct irregularities created by your initial liposuction procedure (or that were present prior to it), including asymmetry, dimpling, or fibrosis.
  • A good liposuction revision may boost your confidence.
  • You can combine it with other cosmetic procedures, such as a breast lift or breast augmentation.

  • Bad liposuction results can’t always be fixed. For instance, a liposuction revision surgery may be limited by the scar tissue created from the first liposuction surgery or other surgical procedures.
  • Liposuction revision carries the same risks as the first time you had lipo. Swelling, bruising, bleeding, and infection are all a possibility.
  • Liposuction revision typically will require more time in the operating room due to the scar tissues created from the initial liposuction procedure.
  • You’ll have a few days to a few weeks of downtime after your procedure, depending on how extensive the procedure.
  • You have to wait until you’ve healed from your first surgery (up to a year) before having a second procedure. Then it may take several more months to see whether a successful liposuction outcome is achieved the second time around.

What should you expect during liposuction revision surgery?

Liposuction revision is an outpatient procedure, and will require General anesthesia. Typically, Liposuction revision is not an ideal procedure to perform in office under local anesthesia due to level of discomfort caused for patients from the scar tissues formed following the first liposuction surgery. Therefor some level of sedation is needed to make the procedure comfortable.

What happens during your procedure will depend on the issue you’re seeking to correct.

  • Liposuction Revision: If your original procedure is classified as “under corrected“ you can have an additional liposuction treatment to achieve your full desired results. It will be much like the first procedure; your surgeon will make small incisions in specific areas and suction out more of the fat cells with a cannula. The risks, side effects, and recovery process will be the same as the first procedure, including wearing a compression garment to help with the healing process and swelling.
  • Fat grafting: also known as fat transfer, may be recommended if your first Liposuction procedure is classified as “overcorrected”. Board certified plastic surgeon will remove unwanted fat from one area of the body and inject it into the “overcorrected” area, sculpting the fat for the desired result. While one session of fat grafting may improve small areas, significant fat volume restoration may require multiple sessions. In addition, not all the transferred fat will survive; therefore, results can be unpredictable and may require multiple treatments.
  • Abdominoplasty: Also known as Tummy tuck (or other procedures such as skin tightening) can also be performed in conjunction with liposuction revision if you have significant loose skin, your doctor can surgically remove any excess and pull the remaining skin for a tighter appearance.

Your recovery process will depend on the type of revision you and your surgeon decide on. Everyone heals differently, depending on age, genetics, and skin elasticity, but typically bruising will subside after a couple of weeks and swelling will resolve after a few months. Full results are usually visible within a year following the procedure.
