Am I a Good Candidate for Renuvion®?
Fat removal techniques like liposuction are a good way to contour certain areas, including the abdomen, arms, and thighs, but this treatment alone cannot provide comprehensive tightening for those who also have loose skin. At Texas Liposuction Specialty Clinic, we have a treatment called Renuvion that we can use to improve the quality of the skin.
Some of our patients in Houston, TX, combine Renuvion with liposuction, while others use it on its own. While it is less invasive than skin removal surgeries, this treatment may not be right for everyone. We can schedule a consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for Renuvion.
What Is Renuvion?
Renuvion is an energy-based device that uses helium plasma and radiofrequency to help the tissue contract beneath the surface. We reach the treatment area through a small incision, and that same opening is used if liposuction is part of your plan.
Patients often use it after fat removal treatments, but it can also be used on its own when skin laxity is the main concern. Renuvion “J Plasma” technology can be used to refine many different areas, including the abdomen, neck, arms, thighs, and more.
How Renuvion Works
Renuvion uses helium gas that becomes ionized when it meets radiofrequency energy, creating a controlled stream of plasma. The plasma and radiofrequency energy heat the nearby collagen fibers as the device moves beneath the skin, which causes those fibers to contract. Helium cools rapidly, so the heat stays focused on the collagen while the surface of the skin remains cool.
Why Candidacy Matters
While Renuvion is a minimally invasive treatment, it still involves small incisions, local anesthesia, and some recovery time. It is also important to choose the right candidates because not everyone will respond consistently to the treatment. Certain conditions and situations make this treatment more effective than others, and we examine each patient to make sure this technology can provide the type of results that the patient is looking for. We are always careful to pair treatments with those who will benefit most from them.
General Requirements for Renuvion Candidates
Stable Weight
Stable weight is important because significant fluctuations can change the way skin responds to tightening. Gaining or losing too much weight after the treatment can also impact the quality of the skin. We will look for consistency in your weight and willingness to maintain it after treatment when discussing your options.
Mild to Moderate Skin Laxity
Mild or moderate looseness responds best to controlled thermal tightening, and the device works most effectively when the tissue still has some elasticity. We will take our time to assess the quality of your skin and determine if Renuvion is appropriate for you.
Good Overall Health
Different health conditions can influence how the body handles thermal energy, so we closely review your medical history to make sure your skin and body can respond positively. Certain issues may require clearance from another provider before moving forward, especially if they affect circulation or healing.
Realistic Expectations
It is important to understand what Renuvion can and cannot do. Tightening can give you firmer and smoother contours, but it cannot remove large folds of skin the way a surgical lift can. It also cannot remove fat from the treatment area. Renuvion skin tightening may be beneficial alongside other types of surgery or treatments.
Areas Commonly Treated With Renuvion
Renuvion can be used in many areas, including the following:
- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Arms
- Thighs
- Back
- Jawline and Neck
When You May Not Be a Candidate for Renuvion
Significant Excess Fat or Loose Tissue
Renuvion tightens sagging tissues, but it cannot replace the reshaping that liposuction or surgery can achieve when fat volume is high or the skin is extremely loose. Some areas simply cannot contract enough to create a visible change with energy alone. We assess the firmness, thickness, and quality of your skin so you know whether tightening will create the improvement you want or if another approach would give you a better outcome.
BMI Too High for Predictable Results
A higher BMI can make contour changes harder to see because excess fat can mask the tightening effect. The underlying shape must be visible enough for the treatment to work as intended, so we look at how the area responds when you move, sit, or stand, not just how it looks at rest. Weight management may come first before skin tightening.
Unmanaged Medical Conditions
Healing is an important part of any energy-based tightening treatment, and certain medical conditions can interfere with that process. Conditions that affect circulation, inflammation, or tissue recovery may require medical clearance before using thermal energy. We review your medical history in detail so you know whether treatment is appropriate or if improving your health should come first.
Steps to Take If You Are Not Ready for Renuvion
Weight Loss Programs
Weight reduction can make a meaningful difference in how well tightening treatments work because excess fat often hides the natural contour underneath. When the goal is to reach a more stable baseline, gradual and sustainable weight changes usually give the skin a better chance to settle into its new shape. Once the body is more defined, it becomes easier to determine whether Renuvion would be beneficial.
Bariatric Surgery
Some patients require a large reduction in body weight before any tightening method makes sense, and bariatric surgery can help support that shift when lifestyle adjustments have stalled. Weight changes after surgery can reveal areas of loose tissue that were not visible previously, which is why we wait for your weight to stabilize before considering tightening options.
Facelift or Body Lift
After major weight loss, it may make more sense to consider surgery that can remove loose skin rather than tighten it. Removing excess tissue and repositioning what remains can provide results that tightening alone cannot accomplish. We explore procedures such as a facelift, body lift, or tummy tuck when Renuvion does not fit the situation.
