Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators are medications that affect the function of muscles by blocking the nerve transmission that excites the muscles to contract. By blocking these signals from the nerve to the muscle, this will in effect cause the muscles to become paralyzed. The most commonly used neuromodulator is botulinum toxin. There are several brand names of botulinum toxin including the first to market called Botox as well as Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. Each brand has a different size molecule of the botulinum toxin which has slightly different metabolism within a person’s body.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Botox is a botulinum toxin that is meant to assist in relaxing and paralyzing certain muscles around the face that can create older appearance due to fine lines and wrinkles that can appear over time if left untreated.

What areas is Botox®typically injected into?

Botox can be injected into forehead lines, crow’s feet and glabellar. The procerus muscles in the forehead cause deep furrows in the glabellar region causing a more stern appearance that can be soften with Botox injections.

Botox can also be used to treat Gummy Smiles where the upper lip elevates too high showing not just the teeth but the gums as well. By injecting Botox into the lip elevator muscles; levator labii superioris muscle, levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle and the zygomaticus minor muscle, this will decrease the lip elevation creating a more pleasing smile.

Patients are required to come back to the office for a follow up 10 to 14 days.

Dysport

Dysport is another neuromodulator like Botox but just a different brand name produced by Galderma. Some like Dysport over Botox and feel that it works just as well if not better. Newer botulinum toxin A brands to the market include Jeuveau and Xeomin. The different types of botulinum are produced where different sizes of the protein will cause a quicker onset and potentially longer results. This is not fully settled in the research and currently Botox is still the most popular neuromodulator with Dysport second in overall use.

Neuromodulators also treat other disorders:

Botox and Dysport can be used to treat other issues such as blephrospasms, chronic migraines, cervical dystonia, masseter and temporalis muscle hypertrophy, and excessive sweating.
